Part 5 - Red cat butts or Gatos Rojo
The Plungis family had 20 or 30 cats, a boa constrictor,
a horse, a golden retriever and god knows what else. They also had
two wild boys my brother's age. When I used to go over and visit
the place had an Addam's Family vibe. I remember seeing cats sleeping
in bowls, draped over the armor in the hall (or was that the sword
on the wall?).
With that many cats some were bound to make the
trek through the neighborhood in search of tasty bird tartar. Guess
where they came to feed? You guessed it; our house, land of many
birds.
My dad really hated those cats and they seemed to
be in a perpetual battle kind of like a mini war of 1812. We also
had two great dogs, Ginger and Frosty who had their own way of dealing
with the cats, but, that is another story. Dad when faced with a
feline foe would use whatever weapon he had available (see the breakfast
nook bench incident), but, one weapon seemed to have an extra flair
and even an artistic bent. One of the cats was up in a tree on the
very same day as the day my dad was painting our house with a spray
gun. Cussing, he aimed the spray gun and marked the creature on
the posterior with bright red paint thereby becoming the first artist
to use a cat as a canvas. I can just see him now selling a living
work of art under the banner, "Erwin Kehrer, The Jackson Pollack
of the cat world". Soon other artists are copying his style on other
animals; Day glo sheep, Abstract jackal, Cows tilted into pools
of oil colors, Erwin. You're a genius.
